Why We Chose £20
It's the question at the heart of The Twenty.
Why not £10?
Why not £50?
Why not £100?
The answer is that The Twenty isn't designed around finding the biggest amount people can afford.
It's designed around finding an amount that feels manageable enough to become a habit while still being meaningful.
That number is £20.
£20 is simple
People understand £20.
It's a straightforward amount.
There's no complicated calculation.
No percentage of your salary.
No complicated contribution formula.
Just:
£20 a month.
That simplicity is important.
The easier something is to understand, the easier it can be to build into a routine.
£20 is small — but not meaningless
£20 a month is:
£240 a year.
That's enough to demonstrate an important principle.
Small contributions can accumulate.
The amount may not feel significant on day one, but repeated 12 times, 60 times or 120 times, it starts to look very different.
That's the power of consistency.
Why not £50?
For some people, £50 a month is perfectly manageable.
For others, it can be a significant commitment.
The Twenty is intended to be accessible to a broader audience.
The aim is not to create a product exclusively for people with substantial disposable income.
It's to create an opportunity around an amount that feels realistic for many people.
Why not £5?
At the other end of the scale, £5 is easier to contribute.
But the contribution becomes smaller.
The Twenty needed a number that could strike a balance between accessibility and meaningful participation.
That's where £20 came from.
The psychology of a fixed amount
A fixed monthly amount can make financial planning easier.
Instead of repeatedly deciding how much to save, you establish a routine.
£20 goes out each month.
The decision has already been made.
This can help turn saving from an occasional activity into a habit.
And then there is the Vault
Under The Twenty's current model, £15 of the £20 monthly contribution goes into the personal Vault.
That means the decision to participate also contains a saving element.
The remaining £5 supports the wider Twenty ecosystem and prize mechanism.
The exact mechanics are set out in the applicable terms.
£20 isn't the destination
The number itself isn't the point.
The habit is.
The idea is that £20 can be the beginning of a different relationship with saving.
Instead of waiting until you can afford hundreds of pounds, you start with an amount you can potentially maintain.
Start with twenty. Build from there.
The bigger idea
The Twenty isn't claiming that £20 will solve every financial problem.
It won't.
But it can demonstrate something important:
You don't always need to start big. You need to start consistently.
That's why we chose £20.
